Learning Outcomes

The main objective of the course “Engineering Seismology and Seismic Norms” is to enable students, who have already gained knowledge of related subjects (statics, strength of materials, structural analysis, reinforced concrete design), to understand basic topics of earthquake engineering, engineering seismology and seismic protection of structures.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Gain knowledge on the basic principles of earthquake engineering and engineering seismology.
  • Revoke the main concepts of modern seismic norms and aseismic design principles.
  • Identify the primary issues in structural and geotechnical seismic engineering.
  • Analyze and deal with structural and geotechnical seismic engineering problems in an effective way.
General Competencies/Skills
  • Search, analyze and synthesize data and information, using the necessary technologies
  • Adaptation to new circumstances and challenges
  • Decision-making
  • Autonomous work
  • Teamwork
  • Project planning and management
  • Advance free, creative  and causative thinking

The course content includes:

  1. Introduction to earthquake hazard.
  2. Engineering seismology and soil dynamics - Seismotectonics of Greece.
  3. Assessing the seismic risk of a region with emphasis on local site conditions.
  4. Structural dynamics problems.
  5. Geotechnical/geoenvironmental earthquake engineering problems.
  6. Basic principles of dynamic analysis of structures – Computational applications
  7. Single degree of freedom dynamic systems.
  8. Multiple degrees of freedom dynamic systems.
  9. Records and spectra.
  10. Aseismic design of structures.
  11. Performance-based earthquake engineering.
  12. Greek seismic norm.
  13. European seismic norm.
