2. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify the different types of biochemical reactions that take place in the context of industrial biotechnology or environmental biotechnology.
  • Know how to design bioreactors to produce specific (bio)compounds.
  • To describe the various biochemical processes used in industrial and environmental biotechnology as well as the processes used in enzymatic conversions.
General Competencies/Skills
  • Data analysis, design and calculation of kinetic rates of biochemical processes.

3. COURSE SYLLABUS

  1. Elements of microbiology and biochemistry
  2. Kinetics of enzymatic reactions
  3. Kinetics of reactions with immobilized enzymes
  4. Kinetics of microbial growth
  5. Kinetics of production of metabolic products
  6. Mathematical simulation models
  7. Design of classical bioreactors (batch, fed-batch, CSTR)
  8. New generation bioreactors (Perfusion, Airlift, SBR)
  9. New generation bioreactors (hollow-fiber, MBR, MBBR)
  10. Aeration and agitation of bioreactors
  11. Sterilization
  12. Applications in industrial processes
  13. Applications in environmental processes.
