You are welcome to attend the lecture «Novel synthetic approaches for the development of functional 2D hybrid materials for energy, environmental and biomedical applications» by Prof. Dimitrios Gournis, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Ioannina.

Abstract

Much of the research effort on 2D materials focuses on its use as building block for the development of novel hybrid structures with well-defined dimensions and behavior suitable for applications among else in gas storage, heterogeneous catalysis, gas/liquid separations, nanosensing and biology. Towards this aim, novel nanostructured pillared materials based on graphene-based matrices (graphene, graphene oxide and graphite nitrate)1-9 and other 2D materials like germanane (GeH)10-13 with high surface area, tunable pore size and aromatic functionalities have been synthesized and studied by using top-down (bulk synthesis) and bottom-up (by combining the Langmuir-Schaefer and the self-assembly techniques) synthetic approaches. Hybrid materials were characterized by a combination of analytical techniques. Representative case studies addressing cutting edge processes of great importance such as the use of these hybrid nanostructures as catalysts, phase change materials, cytotoxic agents, effective adsorbents for environmental remediation, conductive inks and gas (H2 and CO2) storage materials will be discussed.

Short bio

Dr. D. P. Gournis is a Professor of Materials Chemistry in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) at University of Ioannina, Greece. He is an experimental synthetic chemist working in the area of layered and nanoporous materials. His research interests are focused on the synthesis, characterization and study of the properties of layered (2D) materials [in particular inorganic layered structures, clay-based materials (clays, pillared clays, organo-clays, LDHs), carbon layered structures, TMDs, germanane etc], carbon nanostructures (carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, graphenes, carbon dots, molecular diamonds), hybrid organic–inorganic nanocomposites, metallic (magnetic, catalytic or semiconducting) nanoparticles, mesoporous materials (carbon or silica-based) and biocatalysts.

He is the author of 210 international publications in peer reviewed journals (Total Impact Factor, ΣΙF= 1271.3 and Mean Impact Factor, IF/paper = 6.1) acknowledged with more than 9800 citations (>8500 without self-citations) and h-index 50 (Google Scholar). He has also published 5 chapters (invited-refereed) in international books, 4 papers (refereed/3 invited) in book series, 3 technical reports and has 4 international patents, while he has given 39 invited talks in conferences and institutions. He has successfully accomplished the supervision of 16 PhD and 29 MSc Theses and he has supervised more than 150 students in their Diploma Thesis. He has participated as Principal Investigator (10), main researcher (18) or Program coordinator (4) in 32 funded European and National (Greek) programs. He is Associate Editor/member of the editorial board of the journals Frontiers in Materials (specialty section: ‘Carbon-based Materials’), Molecules (Section Editor in ‘Materials Chemistry’), Nanomaterials (Section Editor in ‘2D and Carbon Nanomaterials’) and Materials Futures (IOP publishing) while he has been a member of the board (2016-2018) of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI, elected representative of Univ. of Ioannina). Finally, he’s been the Director of the interdepartmental post-graduate (MSc) program “Chemistry and Technology of Materials” (2018-2022) of Univ. of Ioannina and post-graduate (MSc) program “Advanced Materials Technologies” (2022-today) of DMSE. He is the head and founder (2005) of the Layered & Nanoporous Materials Group (LNM Group) part of the Ceramics and Composites Laboratory (CCL) at DMSE of UoI.
