Abstract

Triggered by increased pressure on the world’s ecosystems, the search for a more sustainable way of global development has intensified in the past decades. Sustainable development is seen as key approach to provide the “ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. But can this be achieved with the current way of thinking? Engineering is a very influential human practice and must be addressed in this context. The author analyzes the engineering design process and proposes a new design paradigm. Integrating a sound understanding of ecological principles, processes, and interdependencies as well as thorough system thinking should be parts of this ecology-inspired approach to engineering called “new ecological engineering”.
