Lecture of Dr. Alexandros Stefanakis in the frame of Eureca-Pro Online Series II

On Wednesday, 15th of December 2021, at 14:00 (CET) Assistant Prof. Alexandros Stefanakis  will present "Nature-based Solutions for Sustainable Wastewater Treament in the New Circular Economy Paradigm", in the frame of the  Eureca-Pro Online Lecture Series II.

Abstract

Our modern societies enjoy the benefits of an economic growth that was never seen before. However, the linear economic model that was the basis of this growth cannot sustain our life standards indefinitely. A new circular approach is suggested to adjust our priorities and re-orient future infrastructure investments to increase the resilience of our societies and mitigate the climate change impacts. In this context, we look back to nature to find new solutions. Nature-based solutions serve exactly this ambitious and multi-factorial purpose due to their inherent ability not only to tackle climate change but also to provide a various ecosystems services and social benefits. This lecture will give an overview of Nature-based solutions and will discuss the potential of nature-based solutions to stimulate a circular model of economic growth, their contribution to new circular strategies for climate change adaptation, and the key actions needed to increase the awareness and attract more investments on nature-based approaches. Finally, various case studies of nature-based solutions for water management will be present from different countries and climatic/social contexts.
