Dr. Alexandros Stefanakis appointed European Climate Pact Ambassador

Assistant Professor Alexandros Stefanakis of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete, has been selected and appointed European Climate Pact Ambassador by the European Commission.

The European Commission first announced the European Climate Pact as part of President von der Leyen‘s Political Guidelines in July 2019. The first Climate Pact Ambassadors have been selected and announced by the Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans on the 16th of December 2020.

The European Climate Pact is an EU-wide initiative inviting people, communities and organizations to participate in climate action, build a greener Europe and contribute to the EU’s target to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The Climate Pact also aims to support climate action by disseminating research results and raising awareness.

The role of Climate Pact Ambassadors is to inform, inspire and support climate action in their communities and networks at national, regional and local level in order to persuade public authorities, organizations, businesses, and schools to commit to ambitious climate action and pledges.

As an Ambassador, Dr. Alexandros Stefanakis will raise awareness about climate change among people and organizations, contribute to the development and implementation of green and sustainable solutions, and make use of his expertise and networks to maximize the outreach of these solutions. In this way, he will continue to promote the excellence in research on adaptation of land and water management to climate change.
